The process of moving and getting a job in the United Arab Emirates for foreigners consists of the following steps:

  1. Sending a resume and getting an interview. The applicant can find a vacancy on his/her own, through a recruitment agency, job search sites such as https://layboard.in/vacancies/jobs-in-uae/jobs-in-dubai/speciality/caregiver, or a local employment center. If the employer is interested in the sent resume, an interview is conducted – face-to-face (the applicant comes to the UAE) or remotely (via video link).
  2. Signing a preliminary contract. The employer must receive a visa quota from the Ministry of Labor and send a contract for the employee to sign. It must specify the position, place of work, date of conclusion and validity period. After signing the contract, the employee returns the document to the employer.
  3. Obtaining a work permit. The issuance of a work permit is handled by the employer. A scan of the document is sent to the employee, after which he/she can cross the UAE border. If the applicant was in Dubai when the permit was ready, he can apply for a change of status.
  4. Issuance of a resident visa. Upon arrival in the country, a foreign employee must undergo a medical examination, submit biometric data, obtain a labor card and a resident visa.

What documents are needed at the first stage

When looking for a job, you will need a resume in English and a diploma. To apply for an entry permit, the foreigner needs to provide the employer with:

  • A recent photo on a white background.
  • A copy of the passport.

Opening a work visa

After the employer and the job seeker discuss and agree on the working conditions, the employer must obtain a visa quota from the Ministry of Labor (MOHRE). If the company is located in a free economic zone, there are restrictions on the number of employees depending on the size of the office.

Also, for all organizations with more than 100 employees, there is a restriction on certain specialties. If the quota has been issued, the employer needs to obtain a work permit. When issuing it, the Ministry of Labor checks whether there are no suitable candidates for the position among the unemployed citizens of the country. The employer is also responsible for issuing the work visa. The work permit is valid for 2 months from the date of issuance.

Issuance of a resident visa

To obtain a resident visa, an immigrant must undergo a medical examination and confirm the absence of infectious diseases (HIV, tuberculosis). An Emirates ID card is also applied for and fingerprinted. A resident visa allows a foreigner to live and work in the UAE for 1, 2 or 3 years, use banking services, obtain a local driver’s license and medical insurance, as well as sponsor and bring family members to the country.

What the UAE visa provides

A visitor’s permit gives a citizen of a third country the right only to stay in the UAE for a short period of time (up to six months) in accordance with the purpose of arrival.

A resident visa opens a wider list of benefits:

  1. The right to open a bank account in the territory of the state.
  2. Access to credit.
  3. The right to obtain a driver’s license.
  4. Access to public health services and social health insurance.
  5. Education for children in local schools of various forms of ownership.
  6. Employment, entrepreneurship, investment.
  7. Visa-free entry to certain states (such as Georgia, for example, it is necessary to clarify the availability of this possibility in the embassy of a particular jurisdiction).
  8. The prospect of obtaining UAE citizenship.

A resident visa offers significantly more benefits compared to a regular visa, and the easiest ways to obtain it are on the basis of setting up a business or partnership in an existing company, as well as freelancing activities.

Recommendations on the content of a resume for a potential immigrant to the UAE

  • In the portfolio it is worth indicating the work experience, projects and achievements that are essentially the closest to the project or vacancy offered by the employer.
  • In the text of the resume there should be as much as possible facts and information that coincide with the data specified in the vacancy.
  • It is worth, not shyly (but also not using overly “spectacular” expressions), telling how the applicant himself assesses his professional skills and achievements.
  • It will not be superfluous to indicate how much, in the opinion of the applicant, corresponds to the position for which he is applying, and why exactly he thinks so.
  • Summary should be written with substance, concise, and systematize the material – all this will create a favorable impression of the applicant.
  • It is worth specifying real salary expectations. There is no point in lowering them in a resume just to get an interview if the applicant is not ready to work for this salary. In addition, if, in general, the resume leaves a favorable impression of the candidate to a potential employer, and the size of the requested salary is more or less within the usual limits for this category of vacancies, this point will not reduce the interest of the employer to the candidate. A good specialist is worth paying him the appropriate salary, employers in the UAE understand this very well.
  • It is necessary to take into account the possibility of application by the employer or recruiter of the Applicant Control System. It controls the flow of job applications that come into the organization and sorts them by the presence or absence in them of keywords “fixed” for a particular vacancy.

If such words are missing from a resume, despite all the skills and potential suitability of the applicant for a particular position, the resume may simply be screened out and not get to the stage where it will be read by a human rather than a robot.
